What is Altitude Sickness?
Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) occurs when the body doesn't get enough oxygen at high altitudes. The lower oxygen pressure makes it harder for your body to absorb oxygen.
Symptoms to Watch For
Common symptoms include:
- Headache
- Fatigue and weakness
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Shortness of breath
- Sleep difficulties
Prevention Strategies
- Gradual Acclimatization: Ascend slowly and take regular rest days
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Avoid Alcohol: Limit alcohol consumption at high altitudes
- Eat Light: Consume easily digestible foods
- Medication: Consult with a doctor about altitude medications
When to Descend
If symptoms persist or worsen, descend immediately to a lower altitude. Never ignore severe symptoms like extreme fatigue or confusion.
